FOMO & Disordered Eating

The fear of missing out creates false urgency and need. It’s like receiving an invite to an event you’d love to go to. Until you got that invite, you didn’t care. You didn’t even know you were missing out on anything. But because you got the invite and the opportunity presented itself now you think that you will miss out if you don’t go. Remembering that five minutes ago you didn’t know about the opportunity gives you power and will allow the urgency to dissipate. Your life will be fine whether you take that opportunity or not.

FOMO is also fleeting and when we recognize it’s fleeting, that is power. Once we remove ourselves from the situation and allow our life to go on, that fear of missing out goes away. Especially if it’s something as simple as food. We won’t stay awake at night thinking how our life might’ve been different if we had bought those Little Debbie christmas tree snack cakes. That sense of urgency is false and it’s fast. If you employ a temporary strategy of distraction, that will go away. The trick is deciding and accepting the loss in the moment and allowing yourself to feel uncomfortable for that brief period.

When you are experiencing food FOMO pick up your journal and ask yourself :

Is this feeling going to harm me?

Is something bad going to happen to me if I stay food sober?

Can I survive this temporary uncomfortable feeling?

What can I do instead of giving in right now?

When we are in a danger zone and that ED voice is speaking to us, our response is typically irrational and often a feeling of panic. We feel this irrational sense of urgency to act.

We DO have to respond to ED, but with the truth, that we are going to be okay if we don’t act on ED’s directive.

Intellectually we know we’re not going to die, nothing bad is going to happen by not giviing in and we know we can survive uncomfortable feelings, but we need to hear it out loud, and sometimes we need to see it written down.

Take the time to respond truthfully with authority to the voice of sabotage when it is directing you to do something you know you don’t really want to do.
