Every January, millions of people make the same resolution:
“This is the year I finally lose the weight.”
“This time I’m sticking to it.”
“No more bingeing. No more starting over.”
They mean it. They want change and they fight hard, but a few weeks in or sometimes just a few days, that determination fades. Cravings hit, stress hits, life happens and the cycle begins again.
Here’s something most people never realize: You’re not failing because you’re weak, you’re failing because you’re alone.
The Lie We’re All Told About Willpower
We live in a culture that worships willpower.
🔥 Push harder
🔥 Try again
🔥 Be stronger
🔥 Just resist
However, we all know willpower isn’t endless and It’s not a permanent tool you can count on 24/7.
Willpower:
• Drains throughout the day
• Burns out faster under stress
• Depends on sleep and hormones
• Is weakest at night — the danger zone
By 8 PM, the brain is exhausted… and the voice of sabotage gets louder and it isn’t a character flaw, it’s biology.
So when someone is trying to recover from disordered eating while relying on nothing but willpower they are set up for failure from day one.
The Real Key to Recovery: Support
Disordered eating recovery is not a battle of strength, Iit’s a process of rebuilding and rebuilding requires support. Think of a skyscraper under construction. Without scaffolding (support) holding it up, it collapses long before it’s complete. Our recovery works the same way.
You need multiple layers of support in place while your brain and habits are transforming.
Here are the 5 essential layers of support:
1️⃣ Inner Support….Your Self-Talk
Speak to yourself like someone you are responsible for caring about.
Instead of:
“What’s wrong with me?”
Say:
“This is hard and I’m still choosing recovery.”
2️⃣ Close Support…A Few Core People
People who help you hold the line, not push you over it. Someone you can text when the urge hits, someone you can ask for accountability and let them celebrate with you.
3️⃣ Community Support…People Who Get It
Isolation fuels disorder and community helps break the shame.
You need a group of people on the same path, people who know what this feels like.
4️⃣ Expert Support…Guidance You Can Trust
You need someone who’s been through it, someone who has a roadmap, tools, strategy, and experience. This is where coaching can change everything.
5️⃣ System Support…Structure That Keeps You Steady
Routines and plans that protect you when you’re vulnerable:
• Meal structure
• Habit stacking
• Emergency craving plan
• Nighttime routines
• Accountability check-ins
More support = more stability = fewer lapses. This is how recovery becomes sustainable.
Why Going It Alone Keeps You Stuck
When you isolate yourself in recovery, you end up:
• White-knuckling cravings
• Hiding when you slip
• Feeling shame after binge episodes
• Starting over repeatedly
• Believing something is “wrong” with you
But you were never meant to fight this by yourself and you don’t have to anymore.
What If This Year Looked Different?
What if this time you don’t rely on motivation, you don’t hope tomorrow goes better and you don’t simply keep “trying harder.”
What if instead, you BUILD a foundation that holds you up:
People
Structure
Accountability
Coaching
Compassion
This is how food freedom becomes your reality and not just your wish.
