Let Go of the Numbers: They’re Not Your Boss

If you struggle with food addiction, you probably know this feeling all too well: waking up and stepping on the scale, holding your breath like your entire self-worth is about to flash across the screen. Or tracking every bite down to the last macro, obsessively scanning nutrition labels, checking your blood glucose, testing your ketones, comparing your jeans to last month’s size…

It’s exhausting.

And worse—it’s a trap.

This numbers obsession is not just a bad habit. For those of us in recovery from food addiction, it’s a danger zone. It keeps us stuck in the very cycle we’re trying to break out of.

When we rely on numbers to tell us whether we’re “good” or “bad,” we hand over our power. Instead of tuning into our bodies, we tune into devices. Instead of learning to trust our experiences, we trust apps, trackers, and scales. Instead of freedom, we experience fear, guilt, frustration, and shame.

And when the numbers don’t go the way we want?

Cue the old patterns:

• “What’s the point?”

• “I’ve already messed up, might as well keep going.”

• “I’ll start fresh tomorrow.”

• Binge. Punish. Repeat.

I’ve seen this play out over and over again—not just in the people I coach, but in my own story, too. For years, I thought that if I could just hit the right number—weight, clothing size, macros, glucose—I’d finally be okay. I believed success was on the other side of the right calculation.

But it never was. And it never will be.

Because food addiction is not a math problem—it’s a mindset problem.

Healing doesn’t come from obsessing over numbers. It comes from learning to stop letting them control you.

That doesn’t mean we throw away structure. In fact, having a plan and staying accountable is part of what makes food freedom possible. But it does mean we stop using numbers as the sole measure of success. Because when we make numbers the focus, we lose sight of what really matters:

• Are you staying food sober today?

• Are you choosing real food that nourishes and supports your healing and serves you well?

• Are you being kind to yourself and staying honest in your recovery?

• Are you making progress that goes beyond what can be measured by a device?

You don’t need perfect macros to be in control.

You don’t need a specific weight to feel at peace.

You don’t need ideal ketones to prove you’re doing it “right.”

You just need to stop chasing and start healing.

Let go of the numbers—they’re not your boss. You are.

And when you begin to trust yourself again…

When you learn to eat without fear, track without obsession, and move without punishment…

That’s when the real transformation begins.
