Here are four things that may have contributed to your disordered relationship with food:
1- You’ve needed soothing and comfort and food became a source of comfort. You’ve had times in your life where you have not felt pleasure or joy, but you seemed to find it in food. You may have even described yourself as a “foodie“ before.
2- You’ve not eaten the right types of food and were therefore left unsatisfied and not deeply nourished. Your body then craved more and you ate to try to get satisfied.
3- You started dieting at a young age when you really didn’t need to and it led to a pattern of disordered behavior with food.
4- At some point in your life, you started eating your meals in a rush, like in the car or standing up and as a result, your body was not able to be in the state it needed to be in order to regulate your appetite.
Recognizing the reasons behind our patterns of disordered eating is one of the first steps towards a life of food sobriety.
