3 Tips For Dealing With Naysayers and Food Pushers

The holidays can be a challenging time for those of us in recovery from food addiction or disordered eating.

Well-meaning (and sometimes not-so-well-meaning) friends and family may question your choices, push food on you, or even make you feel guilty for saying “no.”

If you’re feeling nervous about staying food sober this Thanksgiving, know that you’re not alone.

Here are three tips to help you handle naysayers and food pushers with confidence and grace:

1. Plan and Practice Your Responses When someone asks, “Why aren’t you eating [insert food]?” or says, “It’s the holidays—just one bite won’t hurt,” it’s helpful to have a response ready.

Try:

• “I’ve discovered some foods don’t make me feel my best, so I’m sticking with what works for me.”

• “Thank you, but I’m really enjoying what I have.”

Practice these lines ahead of time so they roll off your tongue effortlessly.

2. Set Boundaries with Kindness If someone continues to push food or pry, it’s okay to firmly set a boundary.

• “I appreciate you offering, but I’ve made my decision, and I’d love to talk about something else.” This shifts the focus and reinforces that your choices aren’t up for debate.

3. Bring Your Own Options To avoid feeling left out, bring a dish or two to share that you know is food-sober-friendly and enjoyable for you. This way, you’ll have something you can confidently eat without worrying about hidden triggers or ingredients. Plus, you might inspire others to try something new!

Remember, your recovery and well-being come first. Thanksgiving is about gratitude, connection, and presence—not the food on your plate.

I’m grateful for you and proud of the steps you’re taking to break free from the cycle of food addiction. You’ve got this!
